Which Keyboards And Electric Pianos Have An Action Most Similar To A Piano?
I want to buy a keyboard or electric piano, since I don’t have room for a piano and don’t want to have to move it around. However, mostly all I do is play piano music so I don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles that most keyboards come with, although I would like one with a weighted action and those almost always seem to be the expensive ones, such as the clavinova.
I say somewhere that the Yamaha DGX 620 has a nice weighted action but it is a little out of my price range already. I had been concidering the DGX 520 but then read that it is only “lightly weighted”. I don’t know of a shop where I can test all of the different options so I’m really trying to find out what I can on the web.
Thanks for your help.

Attn: Classical Pianists And Keyboardists! Which Electronic Keyboard(s) Have The Most Realistic Key Action?
To establish a context, I’ve performed classical piano for 12 years continuously, including Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Chopin’s Ballade No. 1, so I’m very familiar with a true piano’s key action, and I won’t settle for much less.
My priorities:
- I’m looking for a keyboard that will best emulate the hammer action of traditional piano keys, with velocity and pressure sensitivities to match.
- I’m looking for a MIDI controller which I will use with my own sample libraries, so onboard sounds don’t matter.
- It must have at least 88 keys.
- USB connection is necessary.
- Key velocity must be fast enough for trills and flying arpeggios
- The entire keyboard’s weight is not an issue.
- Price must be less than about $1,500, +/- 200. But that’s ideal. Lower prices are better.
- knobs and faders are not necessary, but of course every keyboard comes with mod/pitch wheels.
Conclusion:
Essentially, I am looking for a MIDI controller with realistic key action, because I would like to practice my piano pieces with it. The pressure and velocity sensitivities (which I realize are two different items, with the latter being much more common) are necessary for true dynamic action: those pianissimos, fortes, and sforzandos really have to come through.
Miscellany:
I’ve researched the M-Audio 88es, M-Audio Pro 88, the CME UF 80, and the Roland FP5.
Does the 88es feel realistic enough?
Is there a strange clacking of metal with CME keyboards?
